The Financial Times examined Türkiye’s block of Instagram following accusations that the platform had censored posts about the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh. The article highlighted the consequences of a platform-wide restriction for freedom of expression and access to information.
Drawing on İFÖD data, the Financial Times reported that the number of fully blocked domain names had reached about one million by early 2024. It noted that Türkiye’s censorship measures also covered social media posts, YouTube videos and entire news websites.
