Freedom of Expression Association (İFÖD – İfade Özgürlüğü Derneği) was established by expert lawyers, academicians and human right activists in August 2017 as a non-profit and non-governmental organization which aims to protect and foster the right to freedom of opinion and expression in Turkey.
The Association aims to prevent and end violations of freedom of expression, without discrimination based on language, religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, differing political views and other reasons. In this context, it was established with the aim of providing legal assistance for those who have experienced violation of freedom of expression or whose right of expression is in danger, to engage in research, education, national and international co-operation for this objective, to contribute to solidarity and also to guarantee the rights of these people. More broadly, the Association seeks to achieve the following objectives:- Defending freedom of opinion and expression
- Defending freedom of information
- Defending academic freedoms
- Opposing censorship through the media and the Internet
- Promoting diversity of voices and the right to dissent
- Promoting children’s right to freedom of opinion and expression
- Promoting access to information and knowledge
- Ensuring criminal defamation and insult laws are repealed
- Protecting vulnerable groups from hatred, intimidation and discrimination
