The Freedom of Expression Association (İFÖD) published a press release on the unprecedented scale of social media blocking in September 2026 and the blocking of EngelliWeb’s X account.
İFÖD stated that at least 1,270 X accounts were blocked from access under Law No. 5651 in September alone and that 90% of these accounts were country withheld in Türkiye by X; the blocking spread across a broad spectrum, from journalists and news outlets to LGBTIQ+ organisations, rights defenders and academics. İFÖD also noted that most decisions remain undisclosed and that EngelliWeb’s X account was itself blocked under Article 8/A and country withheld in Türkiye by X.
